Streamlining Insurance for Business Growth: Chris & Tony’s Story

The Challenge: Keeping Track in a Growing Family Enterprise

Chris and Tony, brothers in their late 40’s, own and run the family business that their father started and since retired from. They bought him out. The business has grown and branched out into other product lines since the brothers took over.

Family-first values are still evident, but ‘money is money’ and everything is done and structured correctly and they pay their Accountant well to keep them on-track.

Between themselves personally, their wives, their SMSF and business Key Person needs, they had accumulated many Insurance policies, over many years. Each of them was relevant at the time, but now hard to keep track of, and they’re not sure of the purpose anymore, and the policies have not been compared/reviewed for many years.

The Solution: Comprehensive Review and Strategic Overhaul

We helped review and found they were over-insured in some areas and paying for costly ‘older’ policies. We were able to increase cover in their needed areas, and do so with a more effective and claim-friendly policy design, upgrade policy definitions to reflect current Medical Definitions and include features to allow multiple claims, rather than one-only – and at no extra cost!

Reconfigure Income Protection to suit the business being able to support each Partners income for a longer period of time, which allowed an Increase in cover – at no extra cost.

Put Plans in place to facilitate the smooth Exit of a partner if one of the brothers died or became disabled. With this done, their spouses can receive appropriate payouts and don’t have to make tough business decisions, at a tough emotional time. We worked collaboratively with their existing Accountant to ensure we were all on the same-page.

The Outcome: Optimised Coverage and Simplified Management

As a result of our Advice, the brothers kept some existing Policies that were appropriate to retain, but upgraded to newer more claim-featured Policies in areas that mattered and most importantly to them, we provided a simple single-source document of what their Policies are, where they pay for them from and why they have them (their purpose).

Client Reflection

“We really value having the simple summary you provided. If you can keep this up-to-date for us each year, we’re not going anywhere now it’s all sorted” - Chris
